GENERAL PURPOSE

Perkins Coie’s Real Estate and Land Use practice is seeking a land use planner to support our clients’ development projects by working with our lawyers and paralegals to develop strategic solutions and approaches to design, zoning/permitting, land use planning, development and community agreements, environmental review, and other regulatory processes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These essential functions are primary job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation.

 

  • Analyzing land use, environmental, and permitting standards, policies, and issues from a variety of perspectives, including regulator and regulated party.
  • Working to develop creative solutions to planning problems and advocating complex and/or controversial projects or policy positions on behalf of clients.
  • Collaborating with teams of attorneys, planners, policy professionals, and consultants, and being comfortable stepping into a project manager role to shepherd projects across the finish line.
  • Preparing and filing (or reviewing as a regulator) project application and effectuating permits in local and state jurisdictions.
  • Drafting project descriptions, researching code sections, and reviewing environmental documents (e.g., EIS/EIR).
  • Working independently to manage large multi-disciplinary project teams and guiding them through the zoning entitlement process.
  • Managing a diverse and dynamic workload using excellent time-management skills.
  • Thriving in a team-oriented, collaborative, and fast-paced working environment.
  • Communicating effectively with clients, local governments, agencies, and colleagues.
  • Performing other duties, as assigned.
  • Being present at work during regularly scheduled working hours and as needed in the position, consistent with the firm’s attendance expectations.

TRAVEL

This position may require travel.

 

SPECIFIC SKILLS PREFERRED

  • Experience drafting project descriptions and narratives in land use applications, researching local Comprehensive/Master Plans, Zoning Ordinance code sections and maps, and reviewing environmental and engineering documents/plans.
  • Experience communicating with clients, co-consultants (engineers, traffic consultants, architecture and planning firms, marketing and PR personnel), local/jurisdictional staff, and appointed & elected officials.
  • Ability to work independently to manage large, multi-disciplinary project teams and guide them through the due diligence and zoning & entitlement process.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; Adobe, agency permit portals, online search engines, and web meeting software (WebEx, Teams, Zoom, etc.).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners), PE (Professional Engineer), LS (Landscape Engineer), and/or LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). College degree and/or paralegal certificate preferred. Five years planning experience in either a law, engineering, or architectural firm setting or with a federal, state, or local governmental agency analyzing/supporting regulatory review.
