We offer a flexible, fun, and collaborative work environment.  As a key member of the Real Estate team, the Controller will report to the President and Vice President to assume a strategic role in the overall performance of the portfolio of multifamily assets.

Primary Responsibilities (include but not limited to)

  • Oversee the activities of the accounting department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements and annual audits and annual budgets.
  • Oversee the accounts payable process to ensure the accurate and timely processing of payables, purchase orders, petty cash, core employee expense reports, cash control, and payroll tax compliance.
  • Oversee the accounts receivable process to ensure the accurate and timely collection of receivables, such as developer fee payments, cashflow distributions, asset management fees, incentive management fees and asset disposition fees.
  • Review, finalize and submit draw requests to the construction lender and equity investor for capital contributions for project funding.
  • Assure income tax compliance, including the accurate and timely completion of all income tax returns taking full advantage of all favorable tax codes.
  • Oversee and review the audits & tax returns and assist with the preparation with outside CPA firm.
  • Establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data including streamlining accounting processes and working with the executive team to develop monthly internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Providing guidance, leadership, and ideas for managing cash, enhancing operating performance, improving reporting, and developing metrics.
  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects, including compiling and presenting a variety of special reports.
  • Oversee monthly/quarterly/yearly preparation, analysis, and distribution of financial statements for all commercial assets, corporate books, and numerous development projects.
  • Daily cash management of all assets including mortgages, escrows, reserves, taxes, insurance, payables, management fees, and owner distributions.
  • Manage company payroll for personnel including any compliance and reporting.
  • Facilitate all banking transactions including set up, maintenance, transfers, wires, remote deposit capture scanners, and annual review and compliance reporting for all accounts.
  • Enforce all internal controls related to all financial transactions.
  • Manage all financial transactions; including cash flow and capital contributions and distributions, property tax payments, loan draws and payments and property manager transactions.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Development and execution of company budgets, forecasts, business plans, financial strategies and objectives.
  • Understanding of advanced accounting, regulatory issues, and tax planning.
  • Recruit, interview and recommend all direct report positions, continually maintaining a pipeline of potential candidates.
  • Provide initial and ongoing training to all team members to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to successfully perform all position requirements.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General understanding of real estate and construction accounting practices.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills, as well as an understanding of accounting and financial principles.
  • Ability to work with large databases and datasets for extraction and conversion into useful business information.
  • Engages in frequent verbal and written communication with internal and external parties which may include, lenders or equity investors and their representatives, outside counsel, agencies, special servicers, and potential investors.
  • Working experience with Limited Partnership agreements, loan documents, regulatory agreements, service agreements, or other legal documents relating to conventional and affordable real estate transactions.
  • Ability to understand, and to seek explanation of, complex written regulations from various government agencies.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to cope with deadline pressures.
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Leadership and excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required to effectively manage complex assets and relationships.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management, work within a casual team environment, and work independently.
  • Ability to solve unstructured problems.
  • Understands the value of team approach and effectively uses teamwork to improve results.
  • Proactive, takes initiative, thinks creatively, and drives projects to completion.
  • Knowledge of public and private housing finance programs and related compliance requirements, including HUD, HOME, Section 8, IRS Section 42, and other programs.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field work experience required.
  • CPA Preferred
  • 7-10 years of relevant accounting experience with proven track record in real estate, property management and/or construction industries.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting and/or acting as financial Controller.
  • Knowledge of multifamily development and LIHTC/affordable housing programs.
  • Past experience leading a team or department a plus.
  • Excellent working knowledge of software programs QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Teams.

Compensation
$80,000-$120,000 annual base
